42nd St Tunnel Project at Grand Central Wins Engineering Excellence Award
GZ is proud to have contributed to the award-winning 42nd Street Tunnel Project, which received the Diamond Award in Category C: Structural Systems at the ACEC New York Engineering Excellence Awards. This honor recognizes the project team’s innovation and collaboration in delivering one of New York City’s most technically demanding underground infrastructure projects.
The project required precision tunneling beneath Grand Central Terminal in a dense urban environment completed without disrupting public operations. Advanced monitoring of existing infrastructure, pioneering use of NXBurst rock dismantling technology, and strategic coordination were key to its success.
GZ’s contribution included developing preliminary designs, participating in contracting strategy selection, and reviewing design submissions and specifications from the design-builder. During construction, GZ provided Construction Management support to the MTA, with an assigned Resident Engineer overseeing the excavation, ground support, waterproofing membrane installation, shotcrete liner, and architectural finishes within the new passageway.
We congratulate the MTA, STV, Skanska USA, and Naik Consulting involved on this well-deserved recognition. A live presentation of all Diamond Awards will take place at a black-tie gala on Saturday, April 18, 2026, in New York City.
This award reflects the exceptional engineering expertise and collaboration that made the 42nd Street Tunnel Project a standout achievement in New York’s infrastructure landscape.
