Tunnels support critical water and wastewater conveyance infrastructure by not only delivering clean water from one place to another, but also by diverting flood water away from critical locations, or storing wastewater for later processing. Moreover, the type of water conveyed or stored in shafts or tunnels dramatically influences the facility design and operation. Depending on operational needs, sometimes, the tunnel water internal pressure may exceed its external loads requiring special design. Similarly, it may be more important to keep the internal water within the tunnel —especially untreated water and wastewater—rather than to keep groundwater out, as is usually the case in tunnel design in order to avoid contaminating the groundwater.
