Washington Metro Yellow Line Rehabilitation Project Receives ITA Silver Award
Gall Zeidler Consultants is proud to announce that the Washington Metro Yellow Line Rehabilitation Project has been honored with the Project of the Year Silver Award in the category of projects €100M to €500M by the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA).
The project involved the rehabilitation of a 3,050-foot section of the Yellow Line tunnel, which had suffered advanced corrosion of its steel liner and significant deterioration due to decades of use, water infiltration, and the effects of an in-tunnel fire in 2015. The $303.85 million effort featured a custom steel liner replacement that included cathodic protection—a system rarely applied in transit tunnel rehabilitation. Civil works were executed under a Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) delivery model, allowing early contractor involvement and enabling completion two weeks ahead of schedule and within 0.18% of the original contract value.
As part of the General Engineering Consultant (GEC) team, GZ coordinated inspection activities with WMATA personnel and provided inspection staff to evaluate and document the condition of the tunnel’s steel panels and associated components, such as bolts and ribs. GZ also contributed to the development of the comprehensive inspection report, outlining findings, proposing remediation methods, and recommending repair strategies that supported the successful rehabilitation of this vital transit link.
GZ congratulates WMATA and all project partners on this outstanding recognition and the successful delivery of a complex and high-impact infrastructure project.
