TBM at the Woodsmith Project Reaches New Milestone

We are pleased to recognize a major milestone on the Woodsmith Mine development in North Yorkshire, where TBM Stella Rose has now reached an unprecedented 30,000 meters. This achievement marks another significant step forward in the construction of the Mineral Transport System (MTS), being delivered by STRABAG UK on behalf of Anglo American. Once operational, the system is intended to move polyhalite ore from beneath the North York Moors National Park to a processing plant on Teesside.

The MTS tunnel which is set to become the world’s longest conveyor tunnel will transport tens of millions of tonnes of polyhalite from beneath the North York Moors National Park. According to Anglo American, it has overtaken the previous world record for the longest single TBM tunnel at 25.8km and continuing to advance each day.

GZ is proud to have contributed to this exceptional effort by providing independent verification and risk management services for the TBM drive, including evaluating the expected duration to reach the SBR Shaft and assessing the maximum achievable drive length. Our involvement supported informed decision-making for safe and efficient tunneling operations.

Congratulations to Anglo American, STRABAG UK, and the entire project team on this remarkable and ongoing accomplishment.
