NYC Grand Central Station New Passageway Wins 2025 ASA Outstanding Shotcrete Project Award

Gall Zeidler Consultants (GZ) is proud to share that the 42nd Street New Passageway Project at Grand Central Station has been selected as the 2025 American Shotcrete Association (ASA) Outstanding Shotcrete Project winner in the Underground Category. This prestigious award honors application of shotcrete, innovation, and execution in one of New York City’s most complex underground environments. GZ is honored to have contributed to this achievement and to support a project that enhances passenger circulation and connectivity within the iconic Grand Central Station complex.

To alleviate projected congestion between the Lexington Avenue Line and the Flushing Line due to increased ridership, the MTA implemented a series of improvements, including widening existing stairways and constructing a new passageway that breaks into the existing Flushing Line station cavern arch. The new passageway extends east from the Flushing Line mezzanine and turns north to break through the cavern arch, where a new 13-foot-wide stairway provides expanded access to the station platform.

GZ previously developed preliminary designs, assisted in evaluating contracting strategies, and reviewed design submissions and specifications from the design-builder. During construction, GZ provided Construction Management support to the MTA, including a dedicated Resident Engineer for the Passageway Tunnel. Responsibilities included verifying excavation means and methods, assessing ground support, overseeing installation of the waterproofing PVC membrane system and grouting, managing shotcrete operations for the final liner, and reviewing architectural finishes.

GZ Consultants had been previously involved by providing shotcrete experience in operations as well as quality assurances, helping ensure high-quality work throughout the project.

Our Senior Tunnel Engineer, Louis Falco, and Senior Vice President, Dominic Reda, participated last night in the Twenty-First Annual Outstanding Shotcrete Project Awards Celebration during the 2026 ASA Shotcrete Convention & Technology Conference in Santa Fe, NM, where they proudly accepted an ASA Award.

GZ congratulates the entire team including Skanska USA Civil Northeast as the general contractor, Patriot Shotcrete for th

e final liner shotcreting, Naik as part of the construction management team, and the MTA for embracing an alternative final liner method on this outstanding recognition and is proud to have been part of this award-winning effort.
