GZ’s Senior Tunnel Engineer Louis Falco Publishes Article in ASA Shotcrete Magazine

We are proud to share that our Senior Tunnel Engineer, Louis Falco, has published the article “New York City Grand Central Station New Passageway” in the first-quarter issue of ASA Shotcrete Magazine.

As part of Gall Zeidler Consultants’ on-site team, Louis played a key role in the successful completion of the Grand Central Station New Passageway in New York City, a project that was honored with the 2025 ASA Outstanding Shotcrete Project Award. In his article, he highlights the innovative engineering and collaborative efforts behind the construction of the East-West and North-South passageways, designed to improve passenger circulation for Flushing Line (#7) and Lexington Avenue commuters while addressing congestion in one of the city’s busiest transit hubs.

Louis details the project’s technical achievements, including tunneling through Manhattan’s complex geology, the installation of shotcrete lining, and the use of advanced methods like NxBurst rock deflagration all performed without traditional explosives. He also emphasizes the importance of teamwork, careful planning, and coordination with multiple stakeholders to ensure safety and minimize disruption to commuters.

Specialized teams including Gall Zeidler Consultants, Naik Consulting Group, Parsons, and others contributed to design, geotechnical analysis, and construction oversight. The project overcame significant challenges posed by urban constraints, historic landmarks, and limited access shafts, all while maintaining safety and minimizing disruption to commuters.

The new passageway now provides improved access, egress, and circulation for thousands of daily passengers, representing a successful collaboration between MTA C&D, the design-build team, and project partners.

We are proud to see Louis’ insights and experience shared with the broader engineering community.
